The object

A tabletop on two turned legs that fold flat against a centre brace, the kind a café carried out onto the pavement in the morning and stacked in the back room at night. The top is a single board, the brace is sound, and it stands without rocking on an uneven floor. One hinge is a later replacement in a slightly different brass.

Flaws disclosed by the holder

• A pale watermark across the top where a wet glass stood for years.
• One hinge is a later replacement and does not match the other.

Where it came from

From a relative’s coffee place near the corniche, which closed in 1994; this was the table the owner kept for himself and it spent the next thirty years holding a telephone in a hallway.
