The object

Thirty single discs from the forties and fifties, soot-label domestic pressings, in the wooden crate they were found in rather than a shelf box. Sleeves are mostly absent and the discs are shelved by size rather than by name. Titles were read off the labels and are transcribed on a card in the lid, in pencil, by the holder’s cousin, and where she was unsure she wrote that she was unsure.

Flaws disclosed by the holder

• Surfaces are dusty; three discs show one needle mark each.

Where it came from

Taken out of a radio shop in the forties when it cleared its stock to buy a television, and stacked in a back room under a tarpaulin where they stayed until the building was emptied this summer.
