The object
Paper tickets on their original rolls, uncut, in a box that held them loosely, with the leather pouch the holder’s father carried on the ring. The pouch has a snap, a slot for change, and a strap that is cracked where it was buckled every day for a decade. Nobody has counted the tickets and the holder will not.
Flaws disclosed by the holder
- The pouch strap is cracked along the buckle hole.
Where it came from
Brought home in 1979 by a conductor who had finished his last shift on the line and been told to leave the equipment; he kept it in a drawer for thirty-four years and never spoke about why.
