The object

A worked openwork brooch with a pendant drop on a small link, the drop detachable. The filigree is unmarked but the pins and the fitting are the same alloy and the set has clearly always been together. The catch holds; the joint on the drop is slightly loose without being open.

Flaws disclosed by the holder

• The enamel is chipped at the pin fitting, where the clasp rubs.

Where it came from

One of two bought by the same jeweller in the fifties for two sisters; the second brooch is still in the family and the holder says she would rather see this one go to someone who will wear it than keep it alone.
