Valve table radio in a walnut cabinet, tested on the bench

The object

A five-valve table set that came out of a sitting room and was switched on at the counter, where it tuned a station and held it. The dial glass is intact, the cloth is in place behind the grille, and the back panel has an old repair seam along one joint. The holder has not re-wired anything and the mains lead is the period one it arrived with.

Flaws disclosed by the holder

• Two knobs are replacements and do not match the other three.
• The rear panel has a repair seam along one joint.

Where it came from

The radio the holder’s father listened to with the newspaper every evening, unplugged in 1990 and put in a store room; it went to a bidder who said they had been waiting for one like it since the eighties.
